Village Volunteer founder Shana Greene talks with us about the unique opportunities her organization offers that allow you to immerse yourself in rural villages.
Village Volunteers works in collaboration with local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to implement sustainable solutions for community survival, education, and growth. Committed to preserving autonomy and cultural heritage, Village Volunteers works in collaboration with village programs to support the achievement of their goals and objectives by integrating international volunteerism, sustainable community development projects, and program assistance.
Volunteers are able to work toward gender equality in all of the Village Volunteer programs in both Africa and Asia. One of Village Volunteers’ partners in Kenya, Mama na Dada (which is Swahili for “Mother and Sister”) was formed by and for African women to support the empowerment of the African girl child. Volunteers can work with girls on writing essays on the “Experience of Being a Girl”, create memory boxes where volunteers document the life of mothers who are HIV+ for her children and they can work with girls using our culturally appropriate gender equality and girl empowerment curriculum.
