AfricAid is an international NGO that empowers young girls in Africa by providing opportunities for education, and the tools necessary to improve their own lives as well as the lives around them.
Born from the passions of an eleven year old girl, AfricAid has grown into a well established organization reaching thousands of students. Its founder Ashley Shuyler was only eleven when she first visited Tanzania with her family, what was meant as a photo-safari became the seed that inspired this young woman’s vision.
Today AfricAid has offices located in Denver, CO and in Arusha, Tanzania. Since its inception in 2001, AfricAid has raised over $1,000,000 for education in Africa. With these funds, they have been able to both directly and indirectly reach over 40,000 students through its many programs.
The money that is raised by AfricAid provides funding for scholarships, school supplies, school building projects, school lunch programs, vocational training, teacher training, and works in conjunction with the local initiatives of Tanzanians and other African leaders committed to education.
Program Highlight : The Kisa Project
The Kisa Project is an initiative of AfricAid that provides school scholarships and leadership training to some of Africa’s brightest young women. Through sponsorships provided by American individuals, families and groups, these young women are able to complete their secondary school education, while also participating in a powerful, two-year leadership training program taught weekly by inspiring Tanzanian mentors. Upon graduation, these “Kisa Scholars” return to their home communities to mentor groups of other young women, thus helping to create the next generation of leaders across Africa.
