In developing countries maternal mortality is the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age. Teenage mothers are especially at risk for obstructed birth complications like fistula. Because they lack basic sexual and reproductive rights, women and girls are at the highest risk for contracting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS.
